He says, as he hands me a rose. I melted, right then and there. If I wasn’t in love before, I absolutely was now.

And that’s how it SHOULD be. Character development in video games has come a long way from the 2-d fighting action of Link and Mario trying to save their respective princesses. It’s moved miles away from the video cut-scenes of Final Fantasy VII. Even more real and in-depth than the more recent Knights of the Old Republic, but at least they were on to something huge!

Who knew that Bioware would be able to create a relationship in a video game that would be so real, so tangible, that so many of us were completely crushed and heartbroken when the game was over, simply because we couldn’t marry the Alistair of our dreams.

For those who don’t know, I’m talking about Dragon Age: Origins.

Romance and chivalry are hard to come by these days, and not from anyone’s direct fault. We just don’t put such emphasis on things like this anymore, as it just seems so outdated, but if there’s one thing that playing this game has taught me, it’s that it is totally NEEDED, at least, once in a while.

I fell head over heels in love with a video game character. His name is Alistair. He is the bastard son of a dead king. He is adorable, handsome and sarcastically witty. He is romantic, sweet and unbelievably realistic, even if he only exists as 1′s & 0′s. I don’t know HOW they did it, but Bioware managed to create something and someone so real, that I genuinely got attached, cried & even grew jealous of a particular ending in the game. And I’m not the only one!

So many of my other friends were the exact same way with Alistair. We all were shocked that there wasn’t an open ending, or a video of the lovely couple running off together, or SOMETHING to give us that satisfaction that the relationship had gone the way we’d built it up.

And anyone who knows me, knows that I don’t really give a shit about that mushy, romantic notions shit… normally. But for some reason, I honestly felt completely ripped in half at the end of the game. I spent 58 hours playing it, and felt lost and sad when it was over, instead of that happy & accomplished feeling I normally get when I finish games. This was such a strong feeling, I resented the game and didn’t touch it for an entire week (which was a huge deal to me, because I have so many more achievements to get O.o).

Video games are the new romance novels. If done correctly, they will enthrall you into a relationship on a level you hadn’t felt in a long time, if ever. I always thought those Fabio books were silly, and over the top. I never thought I’d ever want to do anything like in those books. Unfortunately for me, Bioware at least, has figured out how to tap into that special part of my female brain that makes me gushy inside (both figuratively and literally >_>). So, bravo Bioware. Keep this up, and you’ll keep getting my money. I want more Alistair in Dragon Age 3, though. LOTS more.

I had absolutely no cramping, so they sent me home, and referred me to an OB that was part of their hospital network. I called her on Monday morning, and she said she wanted me in asap, but the only time she had anything available was Tuesday at 3pm.

By the time Tuesday had come, I had some very minor cramping, but nothing major at all. The hospital had prescribed me Lortab 5/500 as a precaution. The OB was actually supposed to be at the hospital delivering a baby, but wanted to check on me first so that she could figure out if I needed a D&C (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dilation_and_curettage). Since my cramping was very minor at this point, she decided to have me scheduled for Thursday or Friday.

She was then reminded that she would be in Montana after Wednesday night, so I told the nurse that honestly, I didn’t care who did the surgery, as long as it got done. She said she’d look into the partner docs that would be taking over while my OB was out of the state.

Hours went by, and my cramping got a little worse, but nothing major still. I took a short 1 hour nap, woke up and started cooking some cinnamon rolls. Before they’d been in for 10 minutes, I started horrendous cramps.

I went to take a really hot bath, to help quell the pain, and it worked while I was in the tub, but the second I got out, I started feeling contractions. I knew what was happening, but didn’t know how to handle it.

Within 20 mins, I had managed to lose a shit ton of blood, as well as a golf ball sized clot. At this point, my husband decided that it was time to call the hospital. After some annoying transferring, he was finally told to call my OB. Her after hours doc could hear me screaming in pain from the other side of the house, while he was on the phone, and said to bring me in immediately. It was so excruciating, I thought I was going to die or pass out or both. At this point, I didn’t care which happened as long as the pain stopped.

I had never felt pain like this. Yes I had an epidural with my daughter, when I went into labor with her, but there was a 2 hour period between doses that I felt the full force of labor pains, and it was NOTHING compared to this. The only way I can explain it is if you managed to shoot and stab yourself in the lower abdomen at the same time, and kept twisting the knife.

I went to the hospital, and they dragged me into a room and immediately shot me up with Dilaudid. My pain IMMEDIATELY stopped. This lasted about an hour. The on call ER doctor came in and did a pelvic exam to see what was going on. I writhed around, because everytime he touched my cervix, it was like he was stabbing me.

This, of course, caused more cramps to start back up, and my pain meds to almost immediately cease working. They came in with Morphine, but it barely touched the pain. It was barely 25 mins and I was screaming again. The nurse came back with more Dilaudid, since it was the only thing they’d used that had actually worked.

I then got hooked up to a potassium drip (which sucked ass until she spliced it with saline) and I laid there for 2 hours without pain, just waiting for my OB to get there so they could do the D&C.

Finally, she came in (and wasn’t even supposed to, but she felt it was her responsibility since she had sent me home earlier that day). They knocked me out, and an hour later I woke up in no pain, except that I had to piss like a racehorse.

Got to go home right after that, and am doing well so far. Very minor pain, mostly just sore, like someone punched me over and over in my cervix. I assume this pain is from them dilating it and the scar tissue from my surgery in July ’10 is a bit tender.

The good news to come out of all of this is that the OB I’ve gotten out of this actually listens to her patients. I will be going in for a follow up exam in about 6 weeks (gotta call and schedule it tomorrow because I slept all day until about 5pm) and she said that she is definitely going to be testing for endometriosis.

It’s been a terribly tragic week, and it’s only Wednesday. But, I have loving friends that have all been here for me as best as they possibly can. Noel is supposed to come by Friday, I am pretty sure 2 other friends are coming by either Fri or Sat, and am hoping I can get my little bro to come stay tomorrow
